Council Corporate Plan and Budget
Last year Peter advised that despite significant cuts to public sector budgets in recent years; locally 65% in government grant between 2010 and 2018, there were bigger cuts still to come with insufficient reserves held to cover predicated shortfalls.
Quite a stark message.
Despite this challenging financial backdrop he went on to explain the opportunities for the town around inclusion, growth and futureproofing to make sure the council’s working practices and services are sustainable and meet the future needs of the town.
These included supporting marginalised communities in the town and raising living standards, as well as continuing the regeneration of the town, developing new visitor attractions, expanding our cultural offer and supporting job creation.
Last year we were told to look out for potential development at West Marina, the Harbour and Sports Village amongst other opportunities including the need for better transport infrastructure. As we know some of these have already stalled or sunk without trace.
So to get the latest from the council on what they now see as the opportunities and challenges for the town; whether there are more cuts to come and the impact of these; their revised budget position and progress closing the previously forecasted deficits; plus plenty more make sure you attend our first meeting of 2019.
